Xarelto

XareltoXarelto Injury Attorneys in Boston

Xarelto is an anticoagulant, also known as a blood thinner, which is used to prevent blood clots from forming in patients suffering from certain conditions. Some patients who have taken Xarelto have experienced severe, uncontrollable bleeding, which has been linked to the drug’s side effects. These patients, and their physicians, were not informed of the risks of these, and other, injuries when administering, and taking, this medication. Boston product liability lawyers at the Naumes Law Group help patients who have suffered these severe side effects due to Xarelto hold the manufacturers, and others, liable for the harm caused by the lack of disclosure. Our firm understands the emotional and significant impact an injury of this nature can have on a victim, and their families, and is dedicated to offering individualized, personal representation throughout all steps of litigation. If you’ve been injured, or lost a loved one due to internal bleeding or another injury caused by Xarelto, we stand ready to help you get the compensation you deserve.

Xarelto Risks

In 2011, manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceutical released Xarelto as an alternative to warfarin. Xarelto was prescribed widely to treat patients at risk for blood clots due to atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, pulmonary embolism, as well as those recovering from knee or hip surgery. When approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the recognized side effects listed were pain, dizziness, headaches, blood in urine, and other minor symptoms. In the years that followed, thousands reported more serious side effects after taking Xarelto, which included:

  • Uncontrollable bleeding that can lead to death
  • Hematomas
  • Infections
  • Brain bleeds
  • Pulmonary embolisms
  • Cerebrovascular issues

Amongst these reports, there have been 151 fatalities attributable to Xarelto use. Unlike with warfarin, the bleeding associated with Xarelto use cannot be treated by administering Vitamin K, and a patient’s only option for treatment is to wait until Xarelto is out of his or her system.

Product Liability Claims Against Manufacturers for Xarelto Injuries

Manufacturers have a duty to make sure the products they sell are free from defect and are reasonably safe for consumers. When manufacturers release a defective, unreasonably dangerous product, they are held strictly liable for the harm caused. Evidence suggests that Janssen Pharmaceutical negligently manufactured Xarelto, releasing a medication that put patients at a much higher risk of bleeding than safer alternatives available. Further allegations contained in these claims state that Janssen Pharmaceutical, along with the Xarelto’s marketer, Bayer Healthcare, failed to conduct proper testing of the drug and actively concealed its potential to cause uncontrollable bleeding in patients. Victims harmed by the effects of Xarelto may be entitled to damages for medical costs, lost income, or loss of earning capacity. These claims are often complicated, involving detailed investigation and complex medical testimony, consulting a knowledgeable attorney can aid in the navigation of this difficult legal territory.
